I went to Asia.
WHAT?! It still seems surreal. But dang, it was an amazing adventure.
Earlier in the year we realized we’d have a lull in work at the end of the year, and even though we had a family cruise planned for thanksgiving, we wanted to take advantage of the lull and get some traveling in. I’d picked a two month period of time and searched for the cheapest destinations. It just so happened that tickets to Thailand popped up for just over $500 and we’d talked about going to Thailand for years.
So we did it. I booked flights to Thailand, with an on purpose 24 hour layover in Beijing China. I hoped to fit an excursion in on our layover.
We invited lots of people, but the only takers were our parents. Always the adventurous ones!
It was a busy few days getting to Thailand. The Thanksgiving family cruise ended on a Friday. We drove from Miami to Spartanburg SC to stay with my sister for a day, then continued on our journey to Newark NJ where our flights left Monday morning. We took a 14 hour flight to Beijing, toured China for 24 hours, then continued on the 5 hour flight to Chiang Mai, Thailand.
It was a lot of hustle, but here’s the thing. We’re all budget travelers. And for me at least, part of the high of a trip, is the whole high from the chase of scoring amazing deals. And this trip? Was full of those.
And now for my travel tip. Where did I search for my airfare?
I use a lot of different search engines. But when I’m looking for cheapest destinations to “anywhere” in a certain period of time, I use Skyscanner.
Skyscanner allows you to do a blanket search for tickets around the world on your chosen dates. It’s awesome. The only downside is that a lot of times the dates are set so you may only find a 7 day itinerary when you were hoping for a 10 day vacation. But in this case, I played with it enough that I found exactly what I was hoping for.
Three weeks in Asia.
Here we go.
