After the weekend we left at 3:30 in the morning to start out on our 7 hour drive to see the Mayan Ruins of Copan. That was a LONG drive. Curvy windy roads, random craters in the road, cramped space in the vehicle … but we made it around 1 in the afternoon. It was alot of fun exploring all the ruins. We’d always wanted to go but in all the times we’d been to Honduras we’d never gone. The ability of ancient peoples to build such monumental structures is absolutely amazing. We explored tunnels, buildings, monuments and communities.
That evening we stayed in the town of Copan. It is by far the neatest little village we’ve stayed in in Honduras. …. okay maybe second. Santa Barbara was pretty cool too. All the hotels, shops, restaurants and houses were built on steep slopes. The streets were all of old rock/cobblestone, and there was a lot of typically dressed men in cowboy boots and big hats and people with donkeys and horses. We stayed in a little hotel recommended to us by my uncle …. which of course as luck would have it… ended up being an adventure in itself.
As soon as we got there the power went out. So we left to try to find somewhere to eat. We settled on a place that served typical food. While we were eating stray dogs were walking by and a couple people asking for donations for fake organizations hounded us. My husband wasn’t very impressed by that and I think a couple people may have gotten sick from the food. When we got back to the hotel there was only a trickle of water in our shower, so we snuck into one of the other vacant rooms across the hall and showered there. Using the toilet in our rooms was comical. … and frustrating. The bathrooms were tiny of course, but the toilets were positioned so close to the wall that your knees were almost up to your chin while you were trying to use the toilet! Then, we turned the fan on to go to sleep and the fan spun so fast that I was afraid it was going to spin off the ceiling and come crashing down on us. The stupid fitted sheets were very worn and not “fitted” anymore so we kept doing everything we could to keep linens under us and not be sleeping directly on the mattress. The whole experience was one for the memory bank and one to look back on and laugh later!
The next morning we woke up early and drove another 7 hours to La Ceiba where we planned on spending the last portion of our trip. 🙂
